Joint locks are essentially putting pressure on a joint in such a direction where continued pressure will cause serious injury to that joint. In a nutshells, a joint lock is nothing more than putting pressure onto a joint from a direction where mobility in that joint is limited. The immediate effects are pain. reduced mobility, and if pressure is continued the joint or accompanying bones can be broken, dislocated, fractured, or separated. This is a skill which affords the end user a great deal of latitude when in a combatives situation as the amount of damage done can escalated from pain compliance to full-blown orthopedic damage.
