General Security Guidelines
Residence:
-Ensure all doors remain locked
-Ensure that all windows remain locked
-Ensure all locks are serviceable
-Replace cracked or otherwise unserviceable window or door parts immediately
-Install longer and/or wider “kick plates” in doorframes with longer screws
-The more pins that are in a normal pin-tumbler type lock, the more secure it is
-Install motion sensing lights near entry points
-Install peepholes, digital video preferred
-Install an alarm system
-Always arm the alarm system when leaving
-Minimize decorative items in places where a possible intruder can hide
-Keep flashlight and mobile phone close at hand. If you choose to be armed, leaving your carry weapon on your body where permitted is highly advisable.
-Keep blinds and curtains pulled so high value items aren’t visible from streets or roads
-Check all locks before bed or departure
-Teach any minors and/or dependents in the residence to never open the door for anyone of unknown identity
-Demand that visitors clearly identify any guests they may bring to your residence
-Subscribe to delivery notifications from couriers (UPS, FedEX, etc.)
-Do not allow persons other than yourself (without your direct consent) to request or authorize outside vendors (repairmen, etc.) inside the home
-Designate a “Safe Room” that all family members know to go to during an emergency
-Establish an Emergency Action Plan for various problems. Ensure that actions in the event of fire, storm damage, certain structural failures, tornado, flood, power outage, heavy precipitation especially ice and/or snow, and intruders are covered in the Emergency Action Plan. -Ensure that staff are vetted against acts of violence, any form of theft, drug offenses (drug addictions lead to debts owed to unscrupulous people, which leads to theft to pay said debts), sex offenses, white-collar crimes, and are not currently under any form of protective order (as the respondent).
+While current EEOC Regulations prohibit passing over an applicant due solely to a
criminal record unless such record would directly affect job performance, it is completely
legal and logical to log this information pertaining to any staff with prior legal matters.
-Ensure that no staff member or, especially, customer/client is ever alone in the facility
-Establish a system of accountability for any and all facility keys, keycards, communications equipment etc.
-Establish a system of accountability for any and all company identification items
-Establish a system of access control to any and all restricted areas
-Emplace closed circuit television (CCTV, digital is preferable) camera coverage over any and all exterior access points, interior areas, high traffic areas, access to restricted areas, restricted areas, any and all points where cash is stored, emergency alert system control apparatus (Alarm boxes, fire alarm pulls, etc.)
+Live monitored CCTV system is STRONGLY recommended
-Ensure that management and department heads have live communication (FCC Regulated Business Band Two-Way Radios are available with encryption and strongly recommended)
-Designate Evacuation Areas and routes in accordance with local fire codes
-Ensure all restricted areas remain securely locked when unattended
-Ensure all cash storage areas are securely locked when unattended
-Personnel with facility keys should not carry them exposed to view
-Ensure that all windows and doors are serviceable, with no cracked, broken, or malfunctioning parts to include the locking mechanism
-Ensure that all locking systems are tested regularly and are functional
-When leaving the building, a sweep should be made to ensure that it is in fact fully empty. It is strongly recommended to check locks of windows and doors at this time.
-Once the building is verified empty, all doors should be securely locked and the alarm system is set and activated.
-It is strongly advised that those staff that are legally authorized and permitted to lawfully carry a concealed firearm be allowed to do so. A photocopy of the permit authorizing them to carry a concealed firearm should be kept in the employee’s personnel file
-When building is not occupied, ensure that all merchandise, particularly high value items, are hidden from view from the outside of the facility.
-Establish an Emergency Action Plan for various problems. Ensure that actions in the event of fire, storm damage, certain structural failures, tornado, flood, power outage, heavy precipitation especially ice and/or snow, any other alarm activation, active shooter, Weapon of Mass Destruction threats, and unauthorized intruders are covered in the Emergency Action Plan. Our staff will assist you with this process at no additional cost before we conclude the service.
-Keep up to date on local crime trends by subscribing to such media as Nixle in your area
-Establish and maintain a good rapport with local emergency services professionals
-Ensure management and/or security/loss prevention personnel walk through various areas of the facility at random times
-Utilize intercom systems when necessary. Use plain speech over intercom only as a last resort for physical security threats
-Regularly drill all staff on various facets of the Emergency Action Plan
-Randomly activate an alarm as a drill without prior notification to staff members
-Hire outside vendors to conduct a Penetration Test to further highlight any security deficiencies.
