Well... I believe in the Go Big or Go Home theory (ask the guy me and my boy pissed off at the gym today when two fat kids warm up with his work-set) so I'm gonna expand on that a little bit...
Well folks... A while ago I had a friend and TFTG Follower out of SC shoot me a message to the effect of "Hey, it might be a good idea to do a write-up on training in cold weather gear, what with winter here and all."
Well... I believe in the Go Big or Go Home theory (ask the guy me and my boy pissed off at the gym today when two fat kids warm up with his work-set) so I'm gonna expand on that a little bit...

Ammunition... We all know how important it is to our carry sidearms of choice. Hell, when it comes to guns, the ammunition involved is more of the actual weapon and the firearm itself is just the delivery system, as it is the ammunition that does the damage. Kind of like an ICBM. The missile itself poses very little (relative... I certainly don't want one falling on my house, but I don't want to get pistol-whipped or butt-stroked either.) harm. The warhead however...
Choice of ammunition, specifically an article making some statements after disagreeing (rightfully in my eyes... I agree with the author, though I think he could've been much more tactful in the delivery of his statements) with formula for choosing caliber as suggested by a gunwriter who I've read a little of here and there, is also the root cause of a HUGE shit storm in the gun industry right now... (namely because of this article right here: http://www.activeresponsetraining.net/handgun-stopping-power-science-vs-40-years-of-experience) And while I must say that I agree 100% with the CONCLUSION of this article and that there are some writers that I disagree with more often than I agree with the opinions of, I can't call them an idiot because in the end what they write is no different than what I'm writing right now... An arrogant, one-sided opinion that is just like armpits and assholes... Everyone has a couple, they all stink, and some more so than others. But in the end, it's just an opinion. Don't like it? Well... Drive on. If you have a carry gun and a separate range gun... You're not training.
I'm personally of the opinion that setting one gun up for the range and using a different setup for carry, then your range time is not as effective as it can be... Yes. That means a .22 as well. While any range time is better than nothing, if you think you can use two different setups and get the same gains you're totally fooling yourself. I figured I'd expand upon a video I put up on YouTube yesterday (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWsyR9lMbNo) on training from reference points as opposed to technique-based training....
For those who don't know, technique-based training is the traditional method of hand-to-hand combat training, typically found in the traditional martial arts. Think of it as having a "This technique in response to this attack" approach to things. Training from a reference point uses a point of reference such as an angle or specific body position as the technique's origin rather than a narrow definition. An example of this would be Inside, High Left as opposed to defending against a right handed "street fighter" hook punch. Reference the video, we can only really be attacked along so many angles... yet the number of specific techniques that can come along those angles are numbered in dozens, if not hundreds... All of which can be directed along more specific angles which can easily double, triple, or even quadruple the overall numbers. So... I put something along these lines on our Facebook page the other day and it generated some good discussion, despite having been typed on my phone with the shi*ty format that leaves me with... So I figured I'd expand a little bit.
We have all seen shooting from a static position... We've probably had some exposure to that method of training... We've hopefully been exposed to moving and using angles to prevent us from being harmed... We all (should) know that moving offline at an angle is superior to forward or rearward movement more often than not and usually superior to linear left/right movement as well... can this become a weapon in and of itself? Alright folks... This was sent to me damn near a week ago for feedback and as a basis for an article on bug-out/get-home/whatever-you-want-to-call-it bags...
This was sent to me by Mr. D. Valentin, a Navy vet and a career LE K9 handler. Only thing I'm editing is a few spelling errors because those squiggly red lines are aggravating... Further, I told him I'd throw my feedback in there and I will... You'll see it here in brackets ( [ X content X] ) and if you all have any feedback to it, please by all means shoot us an email or hit us on FB or G+ where this will be posted and get it going. A lot of training, both armed and unarmed, focuses just on how we "adjudicate" those pesky little "hostile negotiations" that may turn up in our lives... But how do we secure those close to us?
There are times when we just can't be by ourselves... Maybe we are with our family, a significant other, a child... For whatever reason we have people with us who have entrusted us with their security. Folks, I get TONS of EMails and messages ALL the time about "What pistol do you recommend?" and then people get all butt hurt when I don't recommend theirs...
I am very steadfast in what I set as the requirements for a Combative Pistol, a Back Up Pistol, and a Get Off Me Pistol (and yes, I do refer to pocket rockets as such). In a fight, there are many different decisions we must make... and we may very well have the rest of our lives to make them... and make them right.
Now I know what you're thinking... "Just another trainer trying to sell his way of doing things... and he's using a line EVERYONE else uses to do it!" And now you're questioning my creativity... Aren't ya? See... I told you so! Well... I'm not talking about methods at all. I'm not even talking about anything anyone can teach you! And NOW you're thinking "What in the blue blazes of hell is this fool talking about then?" Decisions. In a time where time is life. And more importantly how they may affect you... For the rest of your life. There are many people who turn to the more modern "reality based martial arts" systems and styles to better prepare themselves for their own personal defense. As a long time martial artist, I love seeing people get into them regardless of style or system. Martial arts are martial arts to me. But it grinds my gears to no end to hear "reality based this" or "traditional martial arts are no longer relevant or effective that" or "___(sport name here)__ is as close to the street as you can safely replicate."
Blah blah blah. Answer me this hot shot... What were the traditional martial arts designed for? |
